PREVENTING MIGRATION BY OFFERING EDUCATION ADDIS SKILLS, ADDIS JOBS TRAINS YOUNG ETHIOPIANS FOR WORK IN THE CAPITAL OF THEIR OWN COUNTRY. THERE IS WORK AVAILABLE IN ADDIS ABABA. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH GOOD VOCATIONAL TRAINING. BY OFFERING TRAINING, PERSPACTIVE PREVENTS YOUNG PEOPLE FROM BECOMING ADRIFT.
Industry is rapidly developing in Ethiopia. Large industrial areas are arising in large cities. International companies are constantly looking for trained people for construction and the textile, leather and metal industries. But it is hard to find well-trained Ethiopians. The danger is that they will bring in employees from for instance India or China and that the Ethiopian young people will look for work abroad.
A consortium of PerspActive wants to set up a training center in an industrial area. In this center young people can receive training aimed at specific companies. The trainings will take a maximum of six months. There are also plans for company trainings. Aside from trade skills, the young people are also taught so-called soft skills. They are often unfamiliar with large corporations. They have little awareness of their duties regarding working hours and achievements. There is also instruction on their rights regarding wages and working conditions.
The full name of the project is Addis Skills, Addis Jobs; Linking Up For Employment, Curbing Irregular Migration. The program aims to help 1500 unemployed people find jobs in three to five years. The focus lies on young people, women and people with disabilities.
